Google Will Now Show Your School Its AI Visibility. Here's Where to Look.

Somewhere this week, a parent asked Google a question about schools like yours and got a full answer without clicking anything. Until a few days ago, you had no way to know whether your school was part of that answer. Now you do. On August 31, Google rolled out its generative AI performance report in Search Console to every website worldwide, and it shows exactly which of your pages appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and the AI features in Discover.

For school marketers, this is the first time the biggest shift in family search behavior comes with an official scoreboard. This article covers where the report lives, how to read it without misreading it, and the five moves worth making in your first fifteen minutes.

What is the generative AI performance report?

It is a new view in Google Search Console that shows how often your site's pages appear inside Google's AI-generated answers, broken out by page, country, device, and date. Google began testing it in June 2026 and rolled it out to all websites worldwide on August 31.

Does it show clicks or traffic from AI answers?

Not yet. The report shows impressions only, meaning how often your pages appeared, not how often families clicked through. Google has said it is considering additional metrics over time. Treat it as a visibility report, not a traffic report, and it will serve you well.

Why this report matters for school marketing

The Yellow Pages didn't disappear because the businesses in it got worse. It disappeared because families stopped opening the book. The schools still buying the same ad in the same directory weren't wrong about their quality; they were wrong about where the decision was happening. The same shift is underway right now. Families increasingly start their school search with a question, not a keyword. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI which schools to consider, and the answer names two or three. Everyone else is invisible at the exact moment of intent. We've written before about how this changes SEO for private schools, but the frustrating part has always been measurement: you could rank well and still have no idea whether AI answers were including you.

That guessing game just ended, at least for Google's corner of it. The report gives you a number where there used to be a shrug. And because AI Overviews now appear on a large share of school-related searches, a school that ignores this view is grading its marketing on last decade's test. Measuring your AI search visibility is now table stakes, and this is the first free, official instrument for it.

How to track AI Overviews in Search Console

Log into Search Console for your school's website, open Performance in the left menu, and look for the new generative AI view alongside your regular Search results report. Two notes before you go looking. First, if your school's site has very few AI impressions so far, Google may not show the report at all yet; that absence is itself a finding. Second, Google shipped a Search generative AI control at the same time, a settings toggle that can exclude your site from AI features entirely. Check that nobody at your school or your vendor has flipped it. Opting out means AI answers stop recommending you, full stop.

How to read it without fooling yourself

Start with the Pages view, not the totals. The question that matters is not “how many AI impressions do we have” but “which pages earn them.” In every site we manage, AI visibility concentrates in a handful of pages that answer specific questions plainly: tuition and affordability pages, program pages, and clear, factual content. Homepage-style pages rarely lead.

The mistake: panicking because AI impressions show zero clicks.

The fix: it's tempting to dismiss a number that never becomes a visit, and for most metrics that instinct serves you well. Not this one. The report doesn't measure clicks at all yet. An AI impression means Google's answer engine considered your school worth naming. The payoff? Reputation working, even when no click follows.

The mistake: comparing AI impressions to regular search impressions and concluding AI “doesn't matter yet” because the number is smaller.

The fix: compare trend lines, not sizes. Think of it like taking attendance: one day tells you almost nothing, a semester tells you everything. AI features are new and growing; the slope is the story.

The mistake: opting out because you don't like how AI summarizes your content.

The fix: fix the content the AI is reading instead. Exclusion doesn't make families stop asking AI; it makes the answer skip your school.

The mistake: treating this report as the whole AI picture.

The fix: it covers Google's AI surfaces only. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude recommendations live outside it, and for many schools those assistants are already sending real inquiries. This report is one instrument on the dashboard, not the dashboard.

Your first 15 minutes with the report: five moves

Screenshot the baseline. Today's numbers are the “before” picture for everything you do next. Date it and file it. Future you, writing a board update or evaluating a marketing partner, will be glad.

Confirm the toggle is on. Settings, Search generative AI control. It should show your site included. Make this a standing item in any website or vendor audit from now on.

List your AI-visible pages. Note which pages earn impressions in the Pages view. These are the pages Google's AI already trusts. Protect them: no URL changes, no rewrites-for-the-sake-of-freshness, no deletions during a redesign.

Look for the gaps that should hurt. If your admissions or tuition pages earn zero AI impressions while a blog post from 2022 does, that mismatch is your content roadmap talking. Pages that answer questions plainly get chosen; pages that market at people get skipped.

Put it on a monthly calendar. Check it the same day each month, next to your regular Search Console review. One reading is trivia; twelve readings is a strategy. This pairs naturally with the broader work in our private school marketing strategies pillar.

What your school should do about AI search beyond the report

The report measures; it doesn't move the number. Improving what it measures goes by many names (AI search visibility, answer engine optimization, even generative engine optimization), and for schools it comes down to one goal: becoming the school AI can verify and confidently recommend. AI search for schools rewards a pattern: consistent facts everywhere your school appears online, content that answers real family questions in plain language, and the trust signals (reviews, local presence, authoritative mentions) that let a machine vouch for you the way a neighbor would. That is what AI visibility for schools actually means in practice, and if your school is invisible in the new report, that's the work. It also strengthens how you market your school everywhere else, because clarity that machines can verify is clarity parents feel too.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the generative AI report in Google Search Console?

Open your property in Search Console, go to Performance, and select the generative AI view for Search or Discover. If you don't see it, your site may not have enough AI impressions yet, or the report is still propagating to your property.

Why doesn't my school's site show the AI report?

Google shows the report only to sites with sufficient impressions in AI features. If yours is missing, your school likely isn't appearing in AI answers often enough to register, which is a measurement of the problem, not a glitch to ignore.

Should my school opt out of Google's AI features?

For nearly every school, no. Families use AI answers whether or not you participate; opting out removes your school from consideration without reducing the behavior. The stronger play is improving the content and signals those answers draw from.

Does this report cover ChatGPT and Perplexity?

No. It covers Google's own AI surfaces: AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover's generative features. Visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini has to be checked in those tools directly, which is part of any complete AI visibility review.

How often should we check it?

Monthly is right for most schools, alongside your regular Search Console review. Check it more often only during a website migration, redesign, or major content push, when you want early warning that AI visibility slipped.

Make Your School the AI Answer

Google just handed every school a report card, and like every report card, it doesn't grade potential. It grades the work: the content, the consistency, and the signals that make an answer engine confident enough to say your school's name. And the next one is already being written. It's the same work that took one non-elite Baltimore parish school to 97% parent participation in development campaigns, a 95% increase in total gifts, 400+ polished communications, and the #1 spot when families ask ChatGPT for a Catholic school recommendation in the city.
